Celebrate Good Times...With (A Little) Chocolate!

I'll take these!
Valentine's Day. I wrote about the 5 things I hate about it over on my personal blog and I'll also be writing about the 5 things I love about it. I figured that I would stay with the Valentine's Day theme over here as well.

Let's face it, folks. Holidays of any kind can be real diet killers. Valentine's Day with all your chocolatey goodness. You are a weight battler's arch nemesis. I am no exception. The husband and I decided to forego the Valentine's Day dinner chaos this year and go out on Saturday instead. This is always tricky. They try to lure you with their dinner-for-two specials and all that stuff. And you all know how well I do eating out on a regular night for Pete's sake!

I shall name him, Giuseppe!
We settled on an Italian spot we hadn't been to before. We had read good things about it online and all that jazz so we gave it a shot. First of all, it was crowded but we didn't have to wait to get a table at all. We did, however sit at our table for a very long time waiting for a server to acknowledge our presence. I fucking hate bad service, don't you? Ugh. Secondly, I had decided on sausage manicotti (it was pretty mediocre which pisses me off. If I'm gonna waste some calories, it better taste good), which is really decadent I know, but hey...I had a choice of 1 or 2 and I went for 1. Damn straight! Of course, I screwed myself because of the bread. Oh how I love you, garlicky, buttery, yeasty wonder! Way to go, Mrs. One Day. Way to go.  I did actually end the meal on a high note, y'all. I didn't order any freaking dessert! Yes! So, all-in-all I'd call it a success. It could have been a whole lot worse, right? Right?

I'll take a couple...dozen!
I'm allowing myself a treat on Tuesday as well. Should I be doing that? Probably not, but I think it was in the Bible or something that we eat chocolate on Valentine's Day. No? Shut up. In my Bible it does. So, as all of you who are part of a couple celebrate this lovey-dovey holiday, remember this...a little chocolate (I said a little!) in your life isn't gonna kill ya and if you eat a little (I said a little...again!) dark chocolate it's even good for you. If you aren't part of a couple and/or won't be celebrating Valentine's Day this year...have the damn chocolate anyway because I said it was okay.  Ha!

Happy Valentine's Day, y'all!

  1. Don't be too hard on yourself about the breadsticks...Italian breadsticks are sneaky. You plan on having just half of one, and before you know it you've eaten three.

Also, I'm with you on the chocolate! I told hubs not to buy me ANY candy for V-day, but I did buy him some assorted chocolates, so I'll probably let myself have one (or two) of his...

    1. I love the bread. Damn you, bread! Hahaha! I bought some candy for my nieces and nephew. I need to hurry up and mail it because otherwise I'll end up gobbling it up while watching Friends re-runs. That's how I roll.

  2. Look, the hubby and I are going to Finelli's this Friday to celebrate a belated V-Day (because we ain't paying double the price for the same food) and you'd best believe I will be eatting the delicious bread and the creamy butter it comes with and I WILL suck down every single noodle on my plate. It's going to be my "naughty" day and also, it's a special restaurant for the two of us and I don't want to ruin the specialness of it with freaking out about calories.

    1. I agree with you. Sometimes you just have to splurge. How else can you enjoy life, right? We feel the same way. It's always a madhouse ON Valentine's Day too. We're staying in tonight and I'm gonna enjoy that steak and cupcake!

  3. Absolutely love Italian food. Absolutely hate bad service!

I did go on a man-hunt, but it did unfortunately fail. So I guess it's just me and the chocolate tomorrow!

    1. I started a Valentines day tradition of treating myself to a mani-pedi.. because I LOVE ME. (which reminds me, I forgot to book one, but I am getting a haircut this week)

    2. Italian food is sooooooo good. Mmm! My husband is Italian so I'm getting all the recipes I can from his mom so that I can make a killer lasagna some time. Not to mention the desserts! Why do they have to make such good tasting food that is so bad for us? le sigh.

There's not a damn thing wrong with having your own little celebration with chocolate. I've done that myself.

    3. Oh and I love that idea about the mani-pedi! What a nice treat. I may have to start that tradition too!

    1. Right? Well at least tonight I KNOW it will be good because we're cooking it! Hahaha!

      Thank you, chickadee!

  5. I agree with you girl. You must have chocolate on Valentine's day. Valentine's day without chocolate would be like having sex without the orgasm. What would be the point????

    1. I'm telling ya, girl I'll have to resist the urge to head to the store and buy up the on sale chocolate. Haha! The prices are so good on the 15th. I like those truffle ones. Yummmm!

  7. If I had the money, I would use this day as an excuse to go eat a big fat steak...probably a good thing I'm broke!

    I just started p90X yesterday....I am sore!!!!

    1. At our grocery store they had steaks and lobster tails on sale for the holiday. We live in Kansas, so who the hell knows where they got those little, wimpy-looking lobster tails, so we went with the steaks. I can't wait to have one tonight.

I heard that p90X is a bitch. I can't do a lot of the exercises in that one because of my CRPS, but they say it will kick your ass into shape. Good luck!!

  8. Out of nosiness (since we are from the same city)... which Italian place?

I read somewhere that never allowing yourself a little cheat day or meal is a recipe for diet failure. I have to remind myself constantly that it is OKAY to cheat very occasionally.. The "very occasionally" part is where i struggle :)

    1. Oh we went to DeFazio's. Do you know that one? I mean, it wasn't horrible or anything, but with the husband being Italian and from the East Coast where Italian food is to die for...it was pretty mediocre for the price.

I know what you mean. I am the queen of guilt even when I shouldn't really feel all that guilty. It's terrible. I have to get over that and get it into my head that not everything needs to make me feel so damn guilty. We're on the same page, girl.

    2. I just had a feeling it was DeFazio's. I love DeFazio's, but I'm a midwestern girl with super low standards when it comes to Italian and Mexican food. And it is always stupidly crowded there. And sometimes you get a rockstar waiter, and then the next time you get Trainee McGee. It's weird. I still love it though.
